Work has begun on a multi-million pound project to update Norwich Cathedral.

The £4m project will see the construction of a welcome area, an education centre and an exhibition centre. A song school and music library and a community room are also to be built.

The development is being built on the site of the medieval hostry where the monks would provide hospitality and medical treatment for visitors.

The £4m was raised as part of a £10m target for cathedral improvements.

Norwich Cathedral, which was founded in 1096, reached the £10m target in May 2007, eight years after the appeal started.

Money-making events included charity auctions, a drive across China and a pantomime appearance by the Bishop of Norwich at the city's theatre.
