Yorkshire Forward Invests In Crucible Refurbishment

Regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward has announced it will be investing more than £6m as part of a £15m refurbishment extension programme for Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.

The modernisation of the theatre, one of the region's best known, is a key part of the ongoing renaissance of the city centre. This investment by Yorkshire Forward will enable the Crucible to develop and expand its range of cultural and educational activities, including work with schools, business and young people.

On completion of the refurbishment work, the building is expected to achieve a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment (BREEAM) rating of its environmental impact, making it the first theatre in the country to pursue a high standard on the rating scale.

The redevelopment of the Crucible will include a total refurbishment of the main auditorium, studio and public spaces. Additional spaces include a new visitor information centre, a digital archive which traces the history of theatre in Sheffield, a new centre for education and development work and more events spaces.

Sheffield City Council, the Sheffield Theatres Trust, the European Regional Development Fund and the Arts Council have also invested in the Crucible refurbishment programme.
