Work Finishes At Gloucester Docks' New Public Square

A new public square at Gloucester Docks has opened, helping to create an attractive environment for businesses, visitors and residents.

Completion of Shipton Square is part of the wider programme, led by Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, to regenerate Gloucester to create new jobs, attract £1bn of private sector investment into the city and transform 100 hectares of largely derelict land.

The South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) is the lead regeneration partner for the Docks and has enabled this work on Shipton Square to happen.

Overlooking part of Gloucester's historic dockside, Shipton Square lies between Mariner's Church and the Barge Arm flats. Featuring Forest of Dean stone paving, it has been designed as a pedestrianised area.

A key feature of the square is an under-lit cantilevered restaurant balcony and large outdoor eating area, incorporating glass art works by established artist Myfanwy Johns.

Myfanwy has created a series of 10 glass panels for the restaurant’s balustrade reflecting the geometric grid structure of the warehouses surrounding the square.

Regeneration of Gloucester is being spearheaded by the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company (GHURC) in partnership with the South West RDA, English Partnerships, Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire County Council.
