Architecture and Design Scotland (A+DS), has expressed concern over the plans to redevelop the Haymarket area of Edinburgh in a new report.
Tiger Developments, the property investment and development firm, is proposing a 16-storey hotel as the centrepiece of its scheme of the former Morrison Street goods yard, currently used as a car park.
However, A+DS, the architectural adviser to the Scottish Government, do not consider the leaf-shaped glass and stone structure to be of sufficient quality for the city's western gateway.
The report states: "We still have substantial concerns about the design and location of the landmark tower and do not think the approach that is currently being taken will deliver the scale and quality of space required.
"This is a project of national significance, and we do not support the recommended option.
"We urge everyone associated with the project to reconsider the approach that has been adopted to ensure that the best possible solution is delivered, that is not simply based on transport issues but which is an appropriate response in this internationally important location."
Tiger said it was in ongoing discussions with A+DS and still hoped planning permission could be obtained to allow work to begin in the summer.
The Haymarket area is considered a major development opportunity in the heart of the capital city. Plans for the 500,000 sq ft scheme includes hotels, offices and retail outlets.
