A landmark building in Blaenau Gwent has opened its doors to the community more than 100 years after its original unveiling following a major restoration.
The New Year marks a new beginning for the Llanhilleth Miners Institute, near Abertillery, which has been transformed into a venue that is set to become a focal point for all the community.
The refurbishment has been made possible thanks to help from the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Union's Objective 1 programme and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. The funding has helped to provide a new function hall with a bar, community café, training rooms, IT facilities, an interactive library and a mobile crèche.
Deputy First Minister leuan Wyn Jones, said: "The refurbishment has restored the building back to its former glory and it can now offer the community important facilities as well as opportunities for training and upskilling.
"These in turn will bring economic and social benefits to the community, demonstrating how European Structural Funds can make a positive difference to people's lives.
Leighton Andrews, Deputy Minister for Regeneration, congratulated the team on the successful transformation of the Institute. He said: "Llanhilleth Institute has played a central part in the life of the local community since it first opened its doors over 100 years ago and will now once again play a key role in local life.
"The building is a part of Llanhilleths history and heritage and its good to see local people taking such a pride and providing a sustainable and cost effective new use for this building."
The project is a major part of the wider Llanhilleth Area Regeneration Scheme including the new St Illtyd's Community School, improved access to the village, new business units and the creation of a village square. These will all link to a new railway station within the village.
