Crane Collapses In London

Ucatt is calling for an urgent inquiry following a crane jib collapse in Forest Hill, south London.

No workers or members of the public were injured when the jib of a crane in operation collapsed and knocked over several concrete pillars and allegedly crushed a people carrier at around 10am on Tuesday morning.

It is thought it collapsed was due to metal fatigue.

Jerry Swain UCATT regional secretary for London and the South East, said: "Through sheer luck we are not talking about another fatality. The level of accidents involving cranes is so high that workers fear that there must be some kind of fundamental flaw in their operation or installation."

Since 2000 there have been 8 deaths and 24 serious injuries as a result of crane accidents.
