Industry Taps Expertise Of Workers

A campaign to enlist the experience and skills of Scotland's construction workers has been launched to ensure future construction students and apprentices receive the best possible training and education.

With 7,000 recruits each year, a major drive to encourage skilled workers to use their practical expertise is being conducted by Lifelong Learning UK with support from a number of Sector Skills Councils, including ConstructionSkills, SummitSkills and Asset Skills.

The campaign aims to attract around 200 people with extensive work experience in the construction and building sectors to become tutors, lecturers or trainers to fill vacant positions in Scotland's colleges and the work based learning sector.

Graeme Ogilvy, director for ConstructionSkills in Scotland, explained: "It's vital for the future of the construction and building services industries that we have sufficient and highly skilled lecturers to train those entering this profession.

"We have a wealth of talent within the Scottish construction and building services industries and we need those who are keen and interested in passing on their skills to Scotland's new blood to come forward and enrol now.

"We are looking for experienced construction and building services workers who can share their skills and knowledge with the next generation. At present, there is high demand for construction related training but there aren't enough lecturers, technicians, assessors or verifiers to teach people who want to enter the construction and building services sector.

"All trades are in demand, such as bricklayers, surveyors, plumbers, joiners, electricians and site managers."
