Scottish building firm Rok has begun work on an affordable housing development in Inverness.

Working alongside the Cairn Housing Association, the company will build 16 low-cost flats in the Merkinch area of the city as part of a £1.9 million regeneration project.

Upon completion, half of the flats will be made available for rent, while the other half will be put up for sale through Communities Scotland’s Homestake scheme.

Thom McLeod, Director of Rok Tulloch Construction said: "This project is part of a growing relationship between Rok and Cairn Housing Association Limited and we are very excited about getting started."

The development was designed by award-winning architect practice, Keppie Design, and will be constructed to resemble an 'S' shape.

Rok were appointed to the project through a value based contractor selection scheme, assessed by Cairn Housing Association Limited, The Highland Council and Communities Scotland.

Work is scheduled to being on site this month, with the initiative expected to be completed by November 2008.
