Glasgow could be set for a wave of regeneration after the city was chosen to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

A budget of £288 million is said to have been made available for the event, with the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council providing the funds.

While 70 per cent of the infrastructure is already in place, the city will hope that areas in need of regeneration will benefit from the windfall.

Improvement plans include completing the M74, improving Glasgow Airport's rail link and a £220 million investment programme for the airport.

Roads, railways and hotels will also receive extensive work, while the event could yet lead to a self-financing extension of the city's subway system.

The athletes village in Dalmarnock in the east end of the city will become 1,100 units of high quality housing once the Games have ended.

Glasgow was competing against Nigerian capital Abuja for the right to host the Games.
