PoW Camp To Become Tourist Attraction

A Scottish developer has submitted plans to build 50 log cabins for tourists on the site of a First World War prisoner of war camp in the Borders.

A previous attempt to get planning permission failed in 2005 due to risk of flooding, but developer, David Sands, has submitted innovative plans to build the new luxury cabins on stilts.

The 20 hectare Stobs site, to the south of Hawick, housed thousands of German soldiers from 1914 to 1918, and was also in use during the Second World War. The site was originally used as a military training site before being converted for prisoners.

It was later used to resettle demobilised Polish soldiers after the Second World War, and eventually abandoned in the 1950's.
