£29m Leisure Centre Given Go-Ahead

The construction of a new £29 million sports facility at the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks in North Lanarkshire, Scotland has been given the green light.

National sports agency sportscotland has pledged £7m to the Ravenscraig project, which has also received funding from the North Lanarkshire Council and Ravenscraig Limited.

It is the latest of 10 projects to receive stage two approval under the Government’s £50m National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy (NRSFS), which includes £21.2m of sportscotland Lottery funding.

The Ravenscraig project will feature a full-size indoor synthetic football pitch, a 135metre by six-lane athletics track with associated field event training areas, a regional nine-court indoor sports hall, a full-size floodlit outdoor synthetic grass pitch and six floodlit synthetic five-a-side outdoor pitches. A state-of-the-art gym, two dance studios and indoor soft play area will also feature in the completed facility.

The Minister for Communities and Sport, Stewart Maxwell, said: "This announcement underlines this Government's commitment to the provision of world class sporting facilities in Scotland.

"It will be a major boost for Ravenscraig's economic rebirth and to sports facilities in North Lanarkshire and the wider area. I’m delighted to be able to commit an investment of £7m to help support it."
