London's High Court has awarded a painter and decorator £5 million after a fall from scaffolding.

Alan Miah, 45, from Bedfordshire sustained serious injuries resulting in brain damage after falling 26 feet from scaffolding on to stone steps several years ago.

Mr Miah’s employer, Thorne Barton Estates, and the scaffold firm, Gemini Riteway, were found liable and will pay the sum in a 30/70 split respectively.

The worker spent six months in hospital, 19 days of which were in intensive care, and required intensive brain surgery.

The court heard Mr Miah is now bound to a wheel chair and, because of the severe injures to his brain, has suffered from a personality change and needs around the clock care.

Under the settlement, Mr Miah will receive an annual payment of £105,000 for the rest of his life as well as a lump sum of £2.4m.

The money will go towards adaptations to Mr Miah's home to enable him to return to his own house.
