Planning permission has been granted for a new multi-million pound headquarters for Dundee City council.

The new development will be located in he city’s North Lindsay Street, paving the way for the demolition of Dundee’s most unpopular building. Tayside House.

Construction is expected to begin in May 2008, with a view to open the offices by 2010.

The design of the development has been undertaken by Reiach and Hall Architects won a council sponsored competition for the contract.

A spokesman for the council said: “Reiach and Hall’s winning scheme offers a new marker in the city, fronted by an impressive civic logia, and allows daylight and fresh air to penetrate deep into the plan creating light and airy workspaces.”

The council's development quality committee unanimously approved the two applications for planning permission for the North Lindsay Street site.

Planning and transportation Director, Mike Galloway, recommended the applications. Mr Galloway called the proposals “an exciting design solution to the development of this visually important and prominent city centre site".

The new offices will be known as Dundee House, and approximately 1,000 will be based there.
