The National Insulation Association (NIA) has welcomed the 'Blueprint for a Green Economy' paper submitted by the Quality of Life Policy Group.

Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA, said: "Insulating every home in Britain will not only significantly reduce carbon emissions but also result in a better quality of life. There are nearly nine million homes with cavity walls that are not insulated and around half of the existing housing stock requires insulation to reach a thermally efficient standard. The insulation industry has the expertise, technology and capacity to meet the requirements for treating these homes."

"Although the report mentions the benefits of insulation it does not raise enough awareness of the benefits of solid wall insulation for 'hard to treat' homes. This measure is the best way to treat older homes and flats, Government needs to take action now to ensure grants are available to everyone living in this type of accommodation as well as those in more conventional properties with cavity walls and lofts."

"Measures such as green mortgages, council tax rebates and grants which encourage energy efficient homes should be introduced by Government. Insulation is a cost effective measure, cavity wall insulation for example save the average householder £130 - £160 per year as a result of reduced energy bills."
