The demolition of two defective 13-storey tower blocks in Bartley Green, Birmingham, will make way for new homes and an improved environment for local people.
John Lines, local councillor for Birmingham Council, will take the controls of a JCB to help with the demolition, which will be carried out by City Demolition Contractors.
In 2005, Birmingham City Council along with the support from local residents, took the decision to rehouse residents and demolish Broadmeadow and Bartley House in the Athol Farm estate, Bartley Green, to regenerate the area.
Redevelopment of the site will provide an opportunity for up to 80 new mixed tenure homes to be provided including outright sale, low cost sale, shared ownership and rent to support a balanced and sustainable community.
Due to the increasing requirement for larger house types for families in the area it is proposed that 60 per cent of the new homes will have three bedrooms or more.
The development opportunity is to be marketed during Autumn and it is anticipated to attract interest from a range of potential developers following the successful redevelopment of the adjoining Shenley Fields and Leyhill neighbourhoods. A developer should be selected in 2008 and start work on site in 2009.
Mr Lines said: "The demolition of these blocks will provide an opportunity for the council to work with a development partner to provide much needed family homes for our local people."
The Athol Farm estate lies within the South West Housing Market Area and was developed in the 1950s and 1960s with a mixture of low and high-rise homes.
