Hain Calls For Reduction In Construction Fatalities

Peter Hain has reaffirmed his pledge to reduce the number of fatalities in the construction industry.

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions was speaking to the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday, in which he stated he would no longer “tolerate a continued increase in construction deaths”.

There will be a special forum scheduled for next Monday, which will include the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) and the main trade unions.

Speaking about the forum, Mr Hain said: “This will not be talking shop. It must deliver an urgent action to reverse the macabre toll of rising death and injury in construction.”

The number of deaths in the construction industry in 2006/07 was 77, the highest in five years.
