Heads were turned at this year’s Eisteddfod as the judges surprised everyone by awarding the Gold Medal for Architecture to a private building.
Penarth-based architects Loyn & Co scooped the prize in recognition of their conversion of a 19th Century Water tower in Cyncoed.
The Gold Medal is the latest award to be lavished upon the development, having earlier taken top spot at the Grand Design Magazine Awards, a national contest affiliated with the popular Channel 4 television programme. The 2007 LABC South Wales Building Awards also gave the design their seal of approval with a high commendation.
The project saw the water tower converted from a derelict Victorian relic to a stunning family home. Loyn & Co supervised the construction of a two-storey modern extension to the building costing £800,000 and taking 18 months to complete.
The success of the building was applauded by The Independent in a review which claimed: “The attention to detail is impeccable with the T-shaped new-build hitting the right tone that allows the history of the tower to remain legible. This envelope pushing design, by Loyn & Co Architects, co-exists seamlessly with its industrial heritage.”
