This is the view of the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) which welcomed the Government’s plans to ensure the rail network helps secure economic growth and meets high environmental standards.
Pat Steward, Head of Planning and Transport, said: “The White Paper follows recent meetings between RDA and the region’s MPs, during which we reiterated the key issues for the region and ways in which the rail industry could respond.
“Rail use in South West England has grown by 42% over the last 10 years, more than any other region, and many parts of South West England have witnessed unacceptable congestion, delays and service. It’s good to see the Government trying to address these issues.
“It proves we, and other regional partners, have a strong voice that has been heard in Whitehall.”
The RDA specifically welcomes proposals for:
- 1300 new carriages which will help reduce congestion in Bristol
- Improvements to Reading station that will help ensure much better connections between South West England, national and international markets
- A share of £150 million for investment in the region's stations
- £200 million investment in freight rail, hopefully benefiting Bristol Port amongst others
The RDA also welcomes the White Paper’s long-term approach, looking ahead 30 years and the anticipation of increased growth and capacity, improved technology and more environmentally friendly trains.
Investment now must be capable of adapting quickly to rapidly changing circumstances.
