Work gets underway this week on a £1.6 million scheme to boost the economy of Exmoor and West Somerset, thanks to a partnership between Somerset County Council and West Somerset Council.
Contractors are moving in to begin the construction of the Barle Enterprise Centre in Dulverton.
The Project will provide facilities for up to twelve small or medium sized businesses and is expected to provide the base for at least 30 jobs.
The Enterprise Centre is expected to open for business by February 2008. In consideration to the surroundings of the National Park, the buildings have been sensitively designed and include a range of sustainable features, including rainwater recycling and provision of a borehole to provide water.
Somerset County Council has led the initiative to provide welcome investment into the economy of the area, working with the West Somerset Council to secure funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
Alvin Horsfall, Somerset County Council’s Portfolio-Holder for Economic Development, said: “Somerset County Council is committed to increasing the economic growth and competitiveness of the County. This important project will help to achieve that and we are grateful for the active support of the District and parish councils.”
West Somerset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Tourism, Cllr Michael Dowes, said: “Encouraging new enterprise and supporting existing businesses are firm foundations on which to build sustainable economic development in West Somerset.
“We are pleased that we have been able to help finance and facilitate the development of this workspace, and believe it will impact positively on the prosperity of Dulverton, and the district as a whole.”
