Halcrow’s Offices Get Moving for A Sustainable Future

Halcrow’s Scottish staff swapped cars for bikes, walking shoes and bus tickets last week as the global multi-disciplinary consultancy launched its very own ‘mobility week’ across 13 of its UK offices.

Halcrow employees were encouraged to adopt sustainable transport methods in a bid to reduce car use and encourage more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

The sustainable transport initiative took place from Monday May 14 to Friday May 18. Commuters in Halcrow’s Glasgow and Edinburgh offices were offered a free breakfast, discount at a local cycle shop and a chance to win some great prizes by adopting a sustainable mode of transport, including cycling, walking and taking the train or bus to work.

Travel clinics, route plans, timetables and nominated office travel champions were on hand to help staff find out about tailored options for alternative methods of travelling to work. ‘Buddy’ and group schemes were also set up, which allowed staff to join together to co-ordinate their route planning and keep each other motivated throughout the week.

Almost 200 employees in the Scottish offices took part in the week and arrived at work by a sustainable mode of transport, receiving a healthy breakfast on their arrival as a reward. By implementing such behavioural changes, Halcrow staff are minimising the impact on the environment and supporting a more sustainable future for Scotland.

Donald Bell, Halcrow’s Glasgow office Regional Director commented: “Halcrow is at the forefront of Scotland’s transport planning sector and activities last week demonstrate that we practice what we preach. The transport sector has a huge role to play in achieving sustainable lifestyles in Scotland and mobility week offered an ideal starting point to really begin to make a difference.

“We were delighted by the high level of support shown by staff. As an all weather commuter cyclist, it was encouraging to see increased staff participation in sustainable travel. We hope the scheme will also encourage other organisations to adopt similar initiatives and to place sustainable transport on their business agenda.”

Halcrow is one of the leading transport planning consultancies, both in the UK and overseas and has operated as a market leader over the last 40 years.
