Oxfordshire County Council will carry out drainage upgrades on Buttercross Lane in Witney from 3 to 28 August, closing the route from its junction with Willowbank to tackle long-standing flooding.

The scheme is intended to resolve persistent flood issues affecting the estate. As the lane is the only vehicular access, traffic management with marshals will control movement for drivers and pedestrians throughout the works.

Councillor Liz Leffman, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways Construction and Repair, said: "Residents have had to put up with flooding at this location for far too long due to a lack of proper maintenance by the developer prior to the road's adoption by the council as highways authority.

"Officers have worked hard to come up with a solution to this problem, which was far from straightforward to resolve. Once completed, this should significantly reduce the risk of the road flooding whenever there is heavy rain.

"Although marshals will be present while the work takes place, there may be times when it is not possible for people to gain immediate passage through the site. When this happens, we would ask for patience and co-operation from the public."

Ahead of construction, survey work will identify the depth and location of underground apparatus across the site, which may lead to short delays for those seeking access.

Advance warning signs will be placed at the junction of Station Lane and Buttercross Lane two weeks before the start date.

Where feasible, one side of the carriageway will remain open to allow residents to pass through the works area.

Temporary ramps will be set on the kerb line to help larger vehicles travel through, under the supervision of marshals.

Overnight, barriers will secure the site, while one lane will stay open so members of the public can enter and exit Buttercross Lane.
