Robertson Honoured For Delivering Blackley Community Fire Station

Construction News Image

Robertson joined representatives from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS), the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and delivery partners to acknowledge the work of operational crews, support teams and all those involved from planning through to completion.

The station officially reopened in December 2025 and is the first newly built community fire station completed under GMFRS's wider Estates Improvement Programme, which is modernising facilities for communities across Greater Manchester.

Sustainability features include a green roof to help regulate temperature and reduce rainwater run-off, rooftop solar panels to generate renewable energy, and energy-efficient lighting to cut the building's carbon footprint. Electric vehicle charging points support low-emission travel for staff and visitors.

Blackley sits alongside Whitefield as one of GMFRS's newest community fire stations, with work continuing on Stockport Central as part of the service's long-term estate improvements. Robertson took over as main contractor for both the Whitefield and Blackley projects and is also progressing works at Heywood and Withington.

Social value formed a key part of delivery. Robertson ran a two-week construction skills bootcamp with Skills Construction Centre, giving seven young people not in education, employment or training hands-on experience across multiple trades, with three securing jobs. The business also hosted four-month placements through the PlanBEE Manchester programme, leading to an apprentice joining full-time as a trainee site manager.

Paul Coyle, Regional Managing Director, Robertson Construction North West, said: "One of the highlights of the opening was hearing about the lifelong bond within the fire & rescue service community, which was shown by the number of retired firefighters who attended. It is truly special to be welcomed into that community and recognised, alongside our partners, for our role in delivering this station, which better serves the needs of the local community and station crew.

"Our aim is to create lasting social and economic value alongside every high-quality project we deliver, so it has been rewarding to work with GMFRS, who share our commitment to making a positive local impact. We look forward to continuing this partnership and supporting GMFRS in maintaining and improving its estate."
