West Suffolk Council's Cabinet is set to examine a £1.693 million package to revitalise Haverhill town centre, aiming to draw more visitors, bolster local trade and create a livelier High Street.

The scheme features refurbishment of the former HSBC building, a more welcoming and functional Market Square, and further enhancements to public spaces to make the centre easier to navigate, more attractive and a better place to spend time.

A steering group with representatives from all three tiers of local government has led the work, supported by specialist consultants in transport, highways and public realm design.

Feedback from residents, businesses and community groups has informed the proposals, shaping plans for new lighting, improved signage celebrating Haverhill’s heritage, and clearer wayfinding across the town centre.

At its meeting on 21 July, Cabinet will consider recommendations to refurbish the former HSBC site and upgrade Market Square, plus select one additional location to maximise the impact of public investment for residents, businesses and visitors.

Options for the former HSBC building have been explored for the short to medium term, reflecting its prominent High Street position and calls from the community to see visible change. Market Square has been prioritised for its functional and visual benefits. Other potential areas for public space improvements include the Arts Centre, Camps Road, Market Hill (St Mary’s Church), and Queen Street.

The council had previously allocated £693,000 for Haverhill town centre improvements and added a further £1 million earlier this year, bringing the total to £1.693 million.

If Cabinet approves the plans, detailed designs and final costings will follow, confirming which additional public space will be upgraded before works move into delivery.
