The swimming pool at Deben Leisure Centre has reopened following the completion of major roof improvement works as part of East Suffolk Council's wider leisure centre decarbonisation programme.

The project forms part of a wider investment at Deben, Leiston and Waterlane Leisure Centres aimed at improving energy efficiency and supporting the council's net zero ambitions.

At Deben Leisure Centre, the works included significant upgrades to the roof above the swimming pool, together with the installation of new low-carbon heating and energy systems designed to reduce emissions, lower energy consumption and improve the long-term sustainability of the facility.

During the temporary closure, additional maintenance work was carried out across the pool and changing areas, including the complete refurbishment of the showers, repainting and a deep clean of the pool and associated facilities.

Although the pool and health suite are scheduled to reopen on 13 July, work at the site will continue over the coming months. Remaining improvements include upgrades within the plant room and the installation of a solar panel carport in the main car park. Planning permission for the solar carports has been approved, with installation due to begin shortly. The work will be carried out in phases, with only small sections of the car park closed at any one time over an estimated three-week period.

The scheme is being funded through the Government's Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme alongside investment from East Suffolk Council. Planned improvements include electrically powered plant equipment, solar energy generation and more efficient heating systems using low-impact refrigerants.

Deben Leisure Centre is operated by Places Leisure on behalf of East Suffolk Council. Throughout the closure, the remainder of the leisure centre has remained open, while customers have been able to use alternative swimming facilities at Leiston and Felixstowe Leisure Centres.
