Work Starts On £29m Projects At Two Welsh Schools

Construction News Image

Kier has broken ground on two new-build school schemes in south Wales worth a combined £29m, aimed at delivering modern, sustainable learning environments.

Ysgol Iolo Morganwg in Cowbridge and Sennybridge Community Primary School will gain new teaching accommodation, replacing ageing facilities with energy‑efficient buildings designed to support future cohorts.

Both schemes will increase access to Welsh‑medium education. At Ysgol Iolo Morganwg — already a Welsh‑medium setting — capacity will rise from 210 to 420 pupils. In Sennybridge, Powys County Council is progressing proposals for the school to move to Welsh‑medium provision.

The Ysgol Iolo Morganwg project, for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, also includes an adult education offer and a Welsh language immersion centre for primary‑aged pupils.

The developments are being jointly funded by the Welsh Government and the respective local authorities through the Welsh Government's Sustainable Communities for Learning programme, which invests long term in upgraded facilities and improved learner experiences across Wales.

Ian Rees, regional director for Kier Construction Western & Wales, said: "Starting work on Ysgol Iolo Morganwg and Sennybridge Community Primary School is an important milestone in delivering much-needed, modern learning environments for communities across south Wales. Working in partnership with Vale of Glamorgan Council, Powys County Council and Welsh Government, we’re proud to be supporting the delivery of high-quality, energy-efficient schools that will enhance pupil experiences and outcomes. Both projects will also play a key role in expanding access to Welsh-medium education, helping to meet growing demand and create opportunities for future generations."
