The Mayor of Cambridge has helped unveil a new entrance archway at Logan’s Meadow Local Nature Reserve, marking a further step in celebrating and signposting the site’s expanded wetlands.

The bespoke oak structure, installed to raise the profile of the reserve’s recently enhanced habitats, is managed by Cambridge City Council. Positioned at the base of the Equiano Bridge, which links East Chesterton and Riverside, the archway leads to an accessible ramp down into Logan's Meadow.

The Mayor of Cambridge, Cllr Maria Cleminson, was joined by guests including members of the Friends of Logan's Meadow volunteers’ group for a short ceremony.

Funding for the new landmark has come from The National Lottery's Climate Action Fund via its Community Fund, as part of the council’s DiversiTree project, which highlights how diversity strengthens the city’s urban forest.

The same funding is also supporting habitat protection and future planting, including a 'dead hedge' at Logan's Meadow to safeguard sensitive areas, and tree guards at Grantchester Meadows in preparation for the planting of new willows and native black poplars later this year.

Last year, the council and the Friends of Logan's Meadow worked with local residents and river restoration specialists to create new wetland features at the reserve, including open water, reedbeds, ditches and wet woodland.

As these habitats establish, they are expected to benefit wildlife such as water voles, reed warblers, grass snakes, banded demoiselle butterflies, as well as breeding fish and amphibians. Otters and water rail have already been recorded on site.

The wetland creation programme has been largely funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, the Green Recovery Challenge Fund (delivered by the National Lottery Heritage Fund), and Section 106 developer contributions.

Located beside the River Cam in East Chesterton, opposite the Museum of Technology, Logan’s Meadow Local Nature Reserve is open seven days a week.

It is one of the council's core nature sites, sitting alongside 12 other reserves within the wider Cambridge Nature Network and contributing to the council's Biodiversity Strategy. Logan's Meadow provides a vital link between the river corridor, nearby communities and the newly enhanced wetland habitat.
