Network Rail's Morpeth maintenance delivery unit has been transformed over seven months into an energy‑efficient, high‑spec hub to support railway operations across North East England.

The rail infrastructure owner has completed a £3.7 million upgrade of the Morpeth site to strengthen maintenance capability in the region.

An MDU provides a permanent base for the teams who maintain and repair the rail network.

The project refurbished an ageing building into a modern, sustainable workplace, designed to back programmes of improvement across the North East.

The revamped facility is a two‑storey, 22‑module complex, offering office and meeting rooms, a large canteen, locker areas, toilets, showers and adaptable workspaces.

Reusing the existing structure rather than building from scratch reduced materials consumption, cut waste and lowered carbon emissions.

Energy‑saving features include triple‑glazed windows and upgraded insulation, heat‑pump water heating, daylight‑responsive lighting controls and roof‑mounted solar panels.

External enhancements comprise electric vehicle charging points, improved site lighting, a new car park and a biodiversity net gain garden to boost local ecology.

Work by Wernick Refurbished Buildings was phased so the premises could remain open throughout, minimising disruption to day‑to‑day railway activities.
