A new image has offered the first glimpse of a flagship plan to deliver thousands of homes in central Middlesbrough.
The visual outlines phase one at Middlehaven, where long-disused land will be reimagined as a lively neighbourhood at the historic heart of the town.
Middlesbrough Council has teamed up with regeneration specialists Capital&Centric to bring forward houses and apartments alongside new leisure and retail space.
The concept aims to draw residents back to the town’s original centre, clustered around the Old Town Hall.
Early works are already under way to remove a 1960s extension and restore the clocktower of the Grade I-listed landmark, backed by National Lottery Heritage Fund support, signalling a new era 'Over the border'.
The housing site is close to Middlesbrough College and the new Outwood Riverside secondary school now being built, and sits next to the town’s thriving digital and tech sector, the fastest growing in the UK outside London.
Capital&Centric, noted for bold regeneration of urban brownfield sites nationwide, has appointed world-renowned architects MVRDV to collaborate with acclaimed designers shedkm on a vision for the site.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Capital&Centric, said: "Middlehaven is one of the most exciting regeneration opportunities in the UK right now because all of the key ingredients needed to create a buzzing new neighbourhood are already here.
"Working alongside our experienced, imaginative design team, this is a chance to bring a new kind of neighbourhood to Middlesbrough that feels ambitious, creative and full of energy, while also delivering over 2,000 new homes to Middlehaven."
