Network Rail has completed a £2.7m overhaul at Exeter Central to improve passenger flow and accessibility, adding space, modern ticket gates and a more welcoming assistance point, with backing from the Industry Revenue Generating Investment programme and the Department for Transport.
One of the South West's busiest stations, handling nearly three million journeys annually, has been reshaped to better serve customers at peak times and during major local events.
The project delivers an enlarged concourse, new smart-ticket gatelines, an open-plan customer assistance desk and a brand-new retail unit.
Funding has come via the Industry Revenue Generating Investment (IRGI) programme, which is managed by Network Rail to support financially positive schemes that boost revenue and reduce costs to Government, alongside a contribution from the Department for Transport.
By widening the concourse and installing modern gatelines, the scheme tackles long-standing congestion issues, easing queues and improving circulation through the station.
These changes reduce bottlenecks and stairwell crowding at the busiest times, such as large sporting fixtures and Christmas markets, enhancing safety and reliability. Keeping the gatelines in operation during these periods also helps protect revenue.
The shift to an open-plan customer assistance area aims to make the station more welcoming and inclusive, particularly for older people, families and travellers with reduced mobility.
The new retail space creates fresh commercial opportunities and strengthens Exeter Central's role as a supportive hub for the city centre.
Exeter MP Steve Race said: "Exeter Central sits at the heart of our city, connecting residents, businesses, students and visitors with opportunities in Exeter and across the South West. This capital investment recognises the importance of modern, high-quality transport infrastructure in supporting a growing and dynamic city like Exeter.
"These improvements will help ensure the station can meet increasing demand in the years ahead, while making it a more attractive and welcoming gateway to Exeter. It is encouraging to see investment that not only improves the railway for passengers but also supports the wider economic vitality of our city."
Exeter City Council Leader, Cllr Phil Bialyk, said: "I very much welcome these major improvements at Exeter Central station. This is a great investment by Network Rail in the city's transport infrastructure, which will significantly improve the experience for passengers.
"Rail travel is a great way for people to get in and out of Exeter, and I am so pleased that these improvements will ensure that Exeter Central – which is such a key city centre gateway – will continue to thrive in the future.
"Exeter is a fast-growing city which has seen a significant increase in rail passengers in recent years, and Exeter Central is now one of the busiest stations in the South West. Its continued success benefits the whole city, by supporting sustainable growth and ensuring Exeter remains an accessible and vibrant destination."
GWR and Network Rail Western Joint Route Strategy Director, Joanna Grew, said: "These improvements have been designed with the customer at heart. By creating more space, improving the flow of passengers through the station and introducing new smart ticket gates, we have made it easier and safer for people to move around, particularly during the busiest periods.
"The expanded concourse and open-plan customer assistance area will help us provide a more welcoming and accessible experience for everyone. We know how important it is that customers feel confident, comfortable and safe when travelling, and these upgrades will make a real difference to the millions of people who use Exeter Central every year.
"This investment demonstrates our commitment to improving the railway for the communities we serve, while ensuring Exeter Central continues to play a vital role as a gateway to the city."
