Erith Group Appointed for Major Harlow Town Centre Demolition Contract

Construction News Image

Demolition works are commencing at the West Gate site in Harlow town centre, marking a major milestone in Harlow Council's urban regeneration masterplan.

Contractors are mobilising on-site to clear the remaining vacant structures, which span from the former Little Walk shopping arcade to Broad Walk, East Gate, and West Gate. The commencement follows a landmark collaboration agreement secured earlier this year by the council and site owners SSRE Investment 4 Ltd, acting through administrators at RSM UK. The site has experienced years of inactivity and has been largely vacant since the last commercial retailers vacated the premises in 2025.

Extensive preparatory works, including the installation of perimeter site hoardings and detailed structural surveys, have already been completed to ensure safety and operational efficiency.

Erith Group has been officially appointed as the principal contractor to deliver the phased demolition programme. Initial site activity will focus on the erection of scaffolding and internal soft-strip operations to remove fixtures. Full structural demolition to ground level is scheduled to begin later this summer, encompassing the removal of foundations and concrete floor slabs.

The comprehensive demolition programme is projected to continue until the end of 2026. This timeline runs concurrently with enabling works to decommission, remove, and reroute redundant utility infrastructure across the site footprint. Future development plans for the redeveloped site are currently in the design stage.

Commenting on today's announcement, Councillor Dan Swords, the Leader of Harlow Council, said: "For years, the former Little Walk site and surrounding area has stood empty, neglected, and holding our town back. Developers made promises, but promises alone don't regenerate a town. Action does.

"After years of delay and failure, we stepped in. Following months of determined work and negotiation, we secured a landmark agreement that puts Harlow back in control of this crucial site.

"Today, I'm pleased to confirm that demolition is now underway to clear the area and prepare it for the future Harlow deserves. This is a complex programme and it will take time - but make no mistake, this marks the start of real, visible transformation to this area.

"And this is just the beginning. Across the town centre, we are unlocking key sites, driving regeneration forward, and rebuilding the heart of Harlow piece by piece - because no part of our town centre will be left behind.

"We are turning the page on years of decline, restoring pride in our community, and reigniting ambition for our future. We are building a town that people can once again feel proud to call home. We're building Harlow's future."
