Hull City Council and Vital Energi are collaborating on two citywide heat network schemes to strengthen energy resilience, cut carbon and offer long-term cost certainty for local businesses.
With energy market volatility affecting organisations across the UK, resilience is a priority in Hull's Community Plan. To provide an affordable, dependable and low-carbon solution, the council is partnering with Vital Energi to roll out heat networks that businesses can connect to in support of their sustainability and cost objectives.
On 27 April 2026, representatives from Hull City Council, Vital Energi and Ener-Vate hosted a session at Hull Guildhall, briefing local businesses and property owners and answering questions about how the proposed systems will work and how to get involved.
Two schemes are being developed in tandem: the Hull Heat Network and Hull MAGIC. Working alongside each other, they aim to supply more reliable, low-carbon heat and hot water across the city. Attendees heard why heat networks were chosen and the benefits they can deliver, including cost-effective, low-carbon heat; multiple layers of resilience to maintain continuous supply; and compliance with building regulations.
Speakers included Martin Budd, Climate Change Manager at Hull City Council; Jo Longdon, Managing Director at Ener-Vate; and Glenn Harrison, Business Development Executive at Vital Energi. A strong turnout saw local organisations network, learn about the programmes and share feedback.
Beyond the practical advantages, the schemes are expected to support Hull's economy by drawing on local supply chains, creating jobs and championing social value initiatives.
The plans build on Vital Energi's track record, notably the Leeds PIPES project, which saved over 7,000 tonnes of carbon in 2025 and now connects more than 4,100 homes and over 30 non-residential buildings.
