Equans has won two major contracts from Birmingham City Council to deliver extensive upgrades, refurbishment and safety works across nine high-rise blocks in the city.

On the Bromford Bridge estate, the company will undertake major structural improvement works to four 13-storey blocks, each with around 50 homes: Kingspiece House, Thistle House, Bridgemeadow House and Hollowmeadow House. The programme aims to strengthen, refurbish and extend the life of the buildings, covering structural remediation, building safety, envelope renewal, internal upgrades and compliance with the Building Safety Act.

The blocks will also receive a visual refresh, with external wall insulation intended to help cut residents' energy bills and improve the area's skyline. Tenants will get new kitchens and bathrooms, alongside enhancements to communal areas.

The scope further includes enhanced fire protection and safety measures, with lift and fire door improvements and the installation of a new integrated sprinkler system.

At the St George's estate in Hockley, Newtown, five 15-storey blocks — Teviot Tower, Rea Tower, Geach Tower, Scholefield Tower and Martineau Tower — will undergo upgrades. Each has about 90 homes, and planned works include new kitchens and bathrooms, electrical upgrades and ventilation systems, fire-stopping measures and decorative improvements.

"Last year we undertook 35,000 improvements across 6,000 council homes to make homes warmer, safer, more comfortable and more sustainable for our tenants. Energy bills have been cut, new bathrooms and kitchens have been installed, and the look and feel of our communities has improved.

Work on the St George's estate is due to begin in Summer 2026, with the Bromford Bridge programme scheduled to start in early 2027.
