Major works at The Brookfield School on Grandstand Road have reached completion, with a formal handover of the purpose-built sports hall taking place this week. The occasion was marked by a photocall attended by council representatives, school leaders and project partners.
Delivered by contractor Speller Metcalfe, the investment provides a modern, high-quality sports facility alongside a new teaching block and a series of internal alterations designed to improve the learning environment for pupils and staff.
The upgrade is a key milestone in Herefordshire Council's wider £12m programme to enhance and future‑proof education settings for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities across the county.
Councillor Harry Bramer, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Assets, said: "We are delighted to see the completion of these important improvement works at Brookfield School. The new sports hall and upgraded facilities will provide pupils and staff with a modern, welcoming and inclusive environment that supports teaching and physical wellbeing. This investment reflects our continued commitment to delivering the highest‑quality educational facilities for Herefordshire children with SEND."
Michelle Parkes, Headteacher of The Brookfield School, said: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to deliver this project, especially to the Local Authority and Speller Metcalfe for seeing it through. The look on the pupils' faces and the pride they feel, has been worth all the effort. The new sports hall will hugely enhance the curriculum we deliver, as well as creating additional recreational space. The new teaching spaces are beautiful and bright, and the pupils are really respectful of the investment shown in them."
Dafydd Lawday, CEO of the Mercian Trust, which Brookfield School is part of, said: "These new facilities are a game‑changer for The Brookfield School. The sports hall and teaching spaces don't just look impressive — they create real, tangible opportunities for our pupils to learn, grow and thrive. We are hugely grateful to Herefordshire Council and the Department for Education for their support in bringing this project to life. Their investment has helped deliver a modern, ambitious environment that our children truly deserve."
Mark Eaton, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe, added: "It has been a privilege for our team to work with Herefordshire Council and The Brookfield School to bring these improvements to life. We are proud to hand over a high‑quality facility that will serve students for many years to come."
