Work has started on a new junction and road widening scheme linked to a commercial development next to the M6 in Stafford, with new traffic management measures set to come into force next week.

The works form part of the Stafford Gate development at Creswell on the A5013 Creswell Grove, close to Junction 14 of the motorway. The road scheme is being delivered to support a commercial development by Strawsons Property and is fully funded by the company.

The 39-week project began earlier this month, but traffic management measures were temporarily halted this week following safety concerns raised by the project team. Following a review, revised arrangements are now due to be introduced.

A one-way order has been implemented towards Junction 14 and Stafford town centre and is expected to remain in place for most of the duration of the scheme. Additional phased traffic management measures will also be introduced throughout the works.

Warning signs and signed diversion routes have been installed ahead of any changes, while motorists have been warned that anyone ignoring the traffic order could be reported to police.

Early stages of the project will include the installation of new drainage, utility works, widening of the westbound section of Creswell Grove and resurfacing works along the new junction area.

Patrick Allen, cabinet support member for highways at Staffordshire County Council, said: "Following an immediate review of traffic management at Creswell Grove due to the project team’s concerns over safety, a new one-way order will be in place from Monday.

"This is a significant development which will create jobs and provide local facilities which we welcome, but the road scheme providing access is a lengthy one which will impact our network.

"While every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum, this scheme will inevitably cause delays and additional journey planning so we would like to thank people in advance for their patience during the works period."
