On 19 May 2026, Emma Hardy, MP for Kingston upon Hull West and Haltemprice, convened energy and industry representatives in the Houses of Parliament to discuss Britain's hydrogen future.
Humber Hydrogen partners National Gas, Centrica, Equinor and SSE Thermal set out a coordinated bid to deliver Britain's first regional hydrogen transport and storage network in the Humber. They were joined by Associated British Ports, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, GMB, Hydrogen UK, RWE and Uniper, all seen as pivotal to establishing the Humber as the country's hydrogen heartland.
Speaking about the bid, Emma Hardy MP said: "The Humber is the best place for Britain's first hydrogen network, which will bring jobs, investment and a huge potential for expansion.
"Humber Hydrogen is about protecting our region's industrial future, driving clean growth and creating greater energy security for the whole nation."
The partnership intends to combine expertise in hydrogen transport, production, use and storage to create a first-of-its-kind network, linking projects across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire at Aldbrough, Easington, Saltend, Immingham and Keadby, and connecting producers with industrial customers and power stations.
Major projects proposed in the region include the H2H Easington and H2H Saltend production plants and Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage, with up to 3GW of hydrogen potentially produced by Easington and Saltend together. The proposed network would also be well placed to connect into a national hydrogen transmission system under development by National Gas to move hydrogen to industrial clusters across Britain.
As the UK's most carbon‑intensive industrial region, the Humber stands to benefit from hydrogen-enabled fuel switching in hard‑to‑electrify, energy‑intensive sectors such as heavy manufacturing, chemicals, steel and power generation. The plans would also support production of high‑value products including ammonia and the development of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel industry.
