Kier has been appointed by Nexus to deliver a £7.2m overhaul of Regent Centre Metro Station in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. The UK infrastructure services, construction and property group will upgrade the busy interchange to improve safety, reliability, accessibility and long‑term resilience for Metro passengers.

The contract follows Kier's restoration of the Grade II listed Whitley Bay Metro Station, completed in 2025. Using Kier's 360 approach, the project will draw on in‑house expertise and supply chain partners so the right specialists are involved at each stage and the work is completed to a high standard for users.

Planned works include creating a new retail unit; removing the ageing bus canopy that spans the road through the interchange; modernising mechanical and electrical systems; delivering civils and architectural improvements; refreshing the station to provide a brighter, more welcoming environment; and updating wayfinding to enhance accessibility.

Alongside delivery of the upgrade, Kier will support Nexus's social value objectives by engaging with local schools and community groups.

Further improvements include removing the old metal roof canopy, improved signage and enhancing welfare facilities for Nexus employees."

Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with Kier working alongside Nexus to minimise disruption for passengers and the local community during the programme.
