SJ Roberts Construction Wins £7m Powys Contracts

Construction News Image

SJ Roberts Construction has secured two further contracts from Powys County Council to build new social housing in Welshpool and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, together worth £7m.

The projects will deliver 34 highly insulated, energy-efficient homes, supporting the council's ongoing programme to boost the supply of high-quality, affordable housing across the county.

In Welshpool, 16 bungalows will be constructed on the site of the former Gungrog Church in Wales Nursery and Infant School. In Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, 18 properties — a mix of houses, bungalows and flats — will be built on land to the west of Maes yr Esgob to meet a range of local housing needs.

Construction is expected to start this summer, with completion due by the end of 2027.

Commenting on the award, Mike Sambrook, Managing Director at SJ Roberts Construction, said: "We're proud to be partnering with Powys County Council once again, following our appointment earlier this year to deliver a new SEN school in Kerry.

"These developments are an important investment in local communities, providing high-quality, energy-efficient homes that will support residents for generations to come. As a business rooted in the region, it's particularly rewarding to contribute to projects that make a tangible difference to people's lives while also supporting the local supply chain."

Speaking on behalf of Powys County Council, Cllr Matthew Dorrance, deputy leader and cabinet member for a Fairer Powys, said: "Tackling the housing emergency in Powys is one of the council's top priorities, and building high-quality, highly insulated and eco-friendly council homes is central to that work.

"These developments represent a major investment by the council and will help provide secure, affordable homes for people who need them most. We are delighted to have SJ Roberts Construction on board to deliver these new homes and look forward to watching each development progress over the coming months."
