Octopus Energy Generation Expands European Wind Portfolio

Construction News Image

Octopus Energy Generation has announced a significant expansion of its European onshore wind operations, investing €584 million to acquire 321 MW of capacity across 17 different sites. The investment, made on behalf of the Sky fund (ORI SCSp), targets key markets in France, Germany, and Poland as part of a broader strategy to accelerate the transition to homegrown, renewable power.

This latest move brings the total number of large-scale renewable projects managed by Octopus to over 400 globally. In Europe specifically, the firm now oversees 67 onshore wind farms spanning the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Finland.

The expansion comes at a time when onshore wind remains one of the most cost-effective energy sources available. Currently, Europe has 265 GW of installed onshore wind capacity, with 17 GW of that total added in the last year alone.

In France, which represents Octopus' largest continental European market, the firm acquired 143.5 MW across 10 sites. These projects, located in regions including Brittany, Grand Est, and Hauts-de-France, consist of both operational and under-construction farms. Once completed, they are expected to supply green electricity to approximately 65,000 households annually.

Meanwhile, in Germany, Octopus secured four wind farms with a combined capacity of 102.5 MW. Situated in Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Hesse, and Lower Saxony, two of these sites are already generating power, while two remain under construction. This marks the company's 15th deal in the German market, providing enough energy for 71,000 homes.

The firm also expanded its footprint in Poland by acquiring three operational wind farms in the north of the country. With a total capacity of 75 MW, these sites provide clean energy for 120,000 homes. Critically, the deal provides access to a future pipeline of renewable projects, supporting Poland's ongoing shift from coal to a more diverse energy mix.

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO at Octopus Energy Generation, commented: "Europe has one of the greatest wind resources in the world. With major ambitions to build more wind farms, we're still only scratching the surface of what's possible. We now need to move even faster if we're going to unlock untapped wind power potential and meet Europe's clean energy needs.

"From France to Germany and Poland, these latest projects are part of a wider shift away from polluting fossil fuels and towards homegrown, affordable, clean power.

"Amid volatile gas prices and rising geopolitical risk from wars in recent years, countries are quite rightly turning to clean energy. Decentralised renewables like onshore wind offer a faster and more secure path to energy independence and security."
