EGL2 Wren Hall Site Earns Silver For Exemplary Standards

The Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) Wren Hall Converter Station site has been honoured with a Silver Site Award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme's National Awards in Manchester.

BAM, EGL2's main construction works contractor at Wren Hall, achieved the top score of 45 out of 45 in its latest CCS inspection, covering community, environment and workforce categories. Inspectors noted that day‑to‑day behaviours on site are delivering tangible benefits for local residents, the environment and staff, alongside strong innovation and best practice in delivery.

Community engagement was singled out as a particular strength delivered jointly by EGL2 and its contractor partners, including regular newsletters, early notice of potentially disruptive activity and continued dialogue through Community Liaison Group meetings. The inspection also praised the project's visitor hub, which is open and has already hosted several local schools and colleges.

Environmental management and workforce welfare were also commended, with measures such as protections for nearby watercourses, the use of HVO fuel to cut emissions, a commitment to deliver at least a 10% biodiversity net gain, and high‑quality facilities and wellbeing support for those on site.

Neil Lyons, EGL2 Project Director for National Grid, said: "This result reflects the pride our teams and partners take in doing the right thing every day for local communities, for the environment and for everyone working on the project. Seeing BAM, our main construction works contractor at Wren Hall, recognised with a silver site award is a real testament to the collaborative approach we are taking across EGL2. From opening our visitor hub to welcome schools and colleges, to setting high standards on site, we are committed to delivering this nationally significant project responsibly and leaving a positive legacy for the area."

Andy Taylor, Senior Project Manager at Wren Hall for BAM, added: "This award is a real credit to the whole team at Wren Hall and to the strong partnerships we have within the EGL2 project. We place a strong emphasis on being good neighbours, protecting the environment and making sure our workforce feels supported and valued. It is great to see that approach recognised at a national level."
