Network Rail is set to deliver a comprehensive package of engineering works on the East Coast Main Line during the May Day (2–4 May) and Spring Bank (23–25 May) holiday weekends. The programme focuses on essential upgrades to track, drainage, and structures to enhance the long-term resilience of the route.

A primary component of the works involves the installation of bridge beams at Landing Lane in York. This infrastructure is a critical element of the £135 million York Central regeneration project, a joint venture between McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate delivered on behalf of Homes England and Network Rail. By completing the bridge installation over a single weekend, project teams have consolidated crane hire and resource windows, resulting in a reported saving of £1.25 million.

Further north at Tollerton, engineers will undertake the following:

• Points Renewal: The replacement of three sets of life-expired points—the mechanical components allowing trains to switch tracks—to modernise the line and simplify future maintenance.

• Landslip Mitigation: Civil engineering works to stabilise embankments, reducing the risk of ground movement to ensure long-term track safety.

Additionally, a significant drainage renewal project will be carried out at Chapman's Bridge, near Shipton. This involves the renewal of 955 metres of drainage systems designed to prevent track flooding and protect the railway assets from water-related damage.

Jason Parrish, Network Rail's head of planning, said: "These improvements are an important investment in the long‑term resilience of the East Coast Main Line. Renewing life‑expired equipment, improving drainage and strengthening embankments all help reduce delays and protect the railway.

"While there is never a good time to close the railway, scheduling the work over the bank holidays allows us to minimise disruption and deliver best value. We're grateful to passengers for their understanding while we complete this vital work."

The works coincide with ongoing engineering activity for the Transpennine Route Upgrade, which continues through May and June, affecting the corridor between Huddersfield and Leeds.
