HS2 has begun installing a dedicated cycle bridge to connect the Offchurch Greenway in Warwickshire with Route 41 of the National Cycle Network.

The structure will form part of the wider trail linking Bristol, Gloucester, Stratford-upon-Avon and Rugby.

The project follows the dual opening in October 2025 of the nearby Fosse Way bridge and the Offchurch Greenway bridge, which carry a local road and a cycle route across the high-speed railway. HS2's construction partner, Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV), is delivering all three crossings to boost local connectivity.

Construction on the latest bridge started in July 2025. Since then, the team has removed and rebuilt the old embankment, constructed the abutments and wingwalls, and completed drainage and structural backfill. To allow the deck to be safely lifted into place and connected to the abutments, the B4455 Fosse Way near Offchurch is closed until Sunday 26 April 2026.

Vicki Lee, HS2 Ltd's Senior Project Manager said: "All three bridges will play an important role in improving safety and connectivity and I'd like to thank our team of engineers who are working exceptionally hard to deliver this programme of work.

"When the new bridge opens, I’m confident it will be welcomed by cyclists from near and far who visit Warwickshire to enjoy this stunning section of the Route 41 trail."

Once complete, the bridge will separate cyclists and walkers from road traffic and form part of a national route through the English countryside maintained by the charity Walk Wheel Cycle Trust.

The installation is being led by two female engineers at BBV. Kathryn Morgan joined BBV's graduate engineer programme and Charlotte Gibberson joined as a civil engineering apprentice. Both have played key roles on HS2 in the Midlands over the past three years and are now leading this scheme in South Warwickshire.

The bridge features a steel fabricated deck supported by two abutments, with exterior panels finished in historic railway colours following feedback from local stakeholders. It was manufactured by Britons Steel Fabricators in Nottinghamshire and painted and surfaced by Jack Tighe Coatings Ltd in South Yorkshire.

After the deck is installed, the BBV team will complete the abutment side walls, undertake earthworks to tie existing footpath and cycle routes into the structure, lay tarmac, and carry out landscaping and fencing. The bridge is scheduled to open in September 2026.
