The contest to host the new Great British Railways (GBR) headquarters in Derby has been narrowed to two potential sites.

Becketwell, a central brownfield area earmarked for regeneration, and Midland House, an existing railway building opposite Derby station, have been assessed as the most viable options from an original long-list of five.

Derby was confirmed as the HQ city in March 2023 after a competitive process highlighting its rail heritage, established industry presence and central national location. It has also hosted a GBR Transition Team office at John Ellis House since 2024.

GBR will bring together the work of 17 organisations into a single body responsible for operating, maintaining and improving the railway. Until the new organisation is formed, Network Rail and the DfT Operator (DFTO) – home to nationalised train companies – are acting as 'twin engines' to drive the transition.

A final decision on the HQ site is expected before the end of 2026, taking into account regeneration and economic value, value for money, and environmental and social impact.
