Replacement of two sets of seafront steps is getting under way, boosting safety and access for residents, visitors and beach hut owners.

The ageing concrete steps at Southcliff in Walton and at The Leas in Frinton will be swapped for modern galvanised steel versions, engineered to better withstand the coastal environment and provide a dependable route to the beach for years ahead.

At Southcliff, works have commenced, with the top access closed until mid-June. Beach hut holders and visitors will still be able to reach the huts and beach via the bottom of the steps for most of the programme.

A full closure will be needed for one day at the end of April while screw piles (specialist foundations) are installed. A further update will be issued before that closure.

The steps at The Leas in Frinton will be shut from 28 April to 17 July for the replacement. Nearby alternative access points are available, and clear signage will be put up at both locations to guide people during the works.

Michael Cross, Coastal Engineering Assistant Manager, said: "These new galvanised steps are a significant upgrade and will provide safer, more resilient beach access in two popular locations.

"We understand how important these routes are, particularly for beach hut owners, and we will do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum while the work is carried out."

Information boards will be displayed at both sites throughout the project, setting out progress and access arrangements.
