North East Lincolnshire Council has announced that refurbishment works on the Alexandra Dock flyover in Grimsby will begin next month.
The project will cover the stretch between Moody Lane/Westgate roundabout and Lockhill roundabout.
Initial activity will see contractor CR Reynolds carry out temporary works to prepare the site, including the construction of crossover sections to allow traffic to switch between carriageways. These works will take place during daytime hours and will require lane closures in the first week.
During this period, eastbound traffic will be filtered before the Shell roundabout on the Gilbey Bridge section, while westbound traffic will be managed from before Cleethorpe Road Bridge. Traffic using Westgate and the Alexandra Dock bridge will be reduced to a single lane in each direction.
From the night of 20–21 April, full traffic management measures will be installed, including contraflow systems. This will require a full overnight closure of Westgate and the Alexandra Dock Bridge in both directions, with traffic diverted through the town centre.
Once the closure is lifted in the early hours of 21 April, a contraflow system will be introduced. Westbound traffic will temporarily switch to the opposite carriageway for part of the route before returning to its usual side, with two lanes of contraflow in operation for most of the stretch.
Main refurbishment works will then begin on the westbound carriageway on 21 April and are expected to take around 10 weeks. During this time, traffic management arrangements will be adjusted to allow for full resurfacing of the bridge.
Following completion of the westbound side, another overnight closure will be required to switch traffic management, after which similar works will be carried out on the eastbound carriageway for a further 10 weeks.
Throughout the project, free local recovery services will be available within the contraflow sections to assist with breakdowns or incidents.
A main diversion route will direct traffic through central Grimsby, while abnormal load operators and local businesses have been notified of the planned works.
