Smoke Control - D+H UK

Construction News Image

When a fire breaks out, the method used to remove smoke can make the difference between chaos and control.

Choosing between natural and mechanical smoke ventilation depends on the building’s design, layout and fire strategy.

Natural smoke ventilation works by harnessing rising heat and wind to passively clear smoke from a building. It is particularly suited to stairwells, atriums and open-plan areas, offering an energy-efficient, low-maintenance solution that complies with EN 12101 standards. In contrast, mechanical smoke ventilation uses powered fans and ductwork to actively extract smoke. This approach is ideal for car parks, corridors and high-rise buildings, delivering controlled, consistent performance in complex or enclosed environments.
