Work Begins On 306 Homes At Former Sackville Road Estate

Construction is under way on 306 affordable homes at the former Sackville Road Trading Estate in Hove.

Recently, Brighton & Hove councillors joined representatives from the Hyde Group, Homes England and Moda to tour the site and view progress.

The project is being led by Homes for Brighton & Hove, a partnership between Brighton & Hove City Council and housing association Hyde. The new homes are being built on the northern part of the site, next to Moda Living’s Hove Central neighbourhood.

Of the total homes, 183 will be for council rent, allocated to households in housing need on the city’s housing register. A further 123 shared ownership properties will be offered through Hyde.

The homes are designed to be energy efficient, with solar PV panels to help lower residents' energy costs. Households will also receive a range of subsidised travel options — including bus or rail passes, bike vouchers, Beryl bike credit and/or car club membership — to promote sustainable travel.

Plans include car club bays, electric vehicle charging points and extensive cycle parking, along with landscaped courtyards featuring doorstep play equipment, seating and community growing spaces. Residents will also have direct access to Hove Central’s proposed shops and offices.

Councillor Gill Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: "I'm really pleased to see this amazing scheme get underway.

"With thousands of households on our waiting list, this is another example of how the Homes for Brighton & Hove partners are pooling their resources and expertise to build genuinely affordable housing for local people."

James Blakey, Director of Policy and Engagement at Moda Living, said: "It's great to see construction progressing on this important project, which will deliver high-quality, affordable homes for local people.

"We're lucky enough to have worked closely with the local community, council and stakeholders in Hove for a number of years, and we understand how important developments like this are in helping to create balanced, mixed-tenure neighbourhoods where communities can thrive.

"As the final phase of the Sackville Road regeneration moves forward, we're looking forward to welcoming new neighbours to the community."

The new homes at Sackville Road are scheduled for completion in March 2029.
