Dorset Council has confirmed that work to improve Victoria Road in Ferndown will begin in autumn 2026, following revisions to the scheme based on public feedback.

The project is designed to create a greener, safer and more welcoming town centre for residents, businesses and visitors. Originally scheduled to start in spring 2026, the timeline has been pushed back to allow for design changes following a public consultation held in 2025.

Updated plans reflect residents' preferences, including the introduction of heritage-style street furniture, increased greenery and tree planting, fewer bollards and the removal of flagpoles. Additional planting and integrated beds have also been incorporated into the design.

The final proposals will be published in summer 2026 on the Ferndown Town Council website and made available for viewing at its offices in The Barrington Centre.

Funding for the enhanced scheme will come from a combination of local and central sources, including a dedicated reserve from Ferndown Town Council and Local Transport Grant funding allocated to Dorset Council by the UK government.

Cllr Lawrence Wilson, Mayor of Ferndown, said: "I'm thrilled we will soon be able to show you the final detailed designs for the Victoria Road enhancement project. I know it has felt like a long process, but given the significance of the scheme, it was important not to rush it.

"Residents told us they didn't want lots of bollards, and that has been taken on board. By reducing the number of bollards and adding more ground-level planting between them, more green space will be created while still maintaining pedestrian safety. This has had an impact on the timeline, moving the start date from spring to autumn, but the end result will be in keeping with the constructive and valuable feedback received.
