Bedlington Station Opens, Completing Northumberland Line Scheme

Bedlington Station has opened to passengers, marking the completion of the Northumberland Line project.

The launch represents a major milestone in a long-term programme delivered by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, which has been working on the line's stations since 2022.

At Bedlington, the Rail team built two new platforms along with an access road, car park and footpath. Further enhancements included highway works and new signage.

A derelict building was also demolished to enable access to the southbound platform, with materials reused in collaboration with local organisations. Bricks from the structure were preserved and shared with East Bedlington Parish Council, to restore the station building at Bedlington; Hope Church in Bedlington, for a garden restoration project; and Woodhorn Narrow Gauge Railway in Ashington, to help rebuild their station.

The Northumberland Line involved six stations across 18 miles of track. Stations on the route were originally closed in 1963, but services now link Ashington and Newcastle Central Station once again, with the end-to-end journey taking around 35 minutes.

Olivia Perkins, managing director – Rail said: "With the sixth and final station now complete, the Northumberland Line stands as a testament to long term investment, regional collaboration, and meaningful community impact. This project has reconnected towns and people, and strengthened the foundations for future economic growth, sustainable travel, and improved access to more opportunities.

"Our team has enjoyed working alongside a number of delivery organisations to bring the Northumberland Line back into use; delivering the scheme has been a matter of personal pride for many of them who live locally. I am extremely proud of what they have achieved."

Bedlington is the final station to open on the line. The stations on the Northumberland Line are Ashington (opened December 2024), Seaton Delaval (opened December 2024), Newsham (opened March 2025), Blyth Bebside (opened October 2025), Northumberland Park (opened February 2026) and Bedlington (opened March 2026).
