East Coast Main Line Works Between York And Northallerton To Run Over Both May Bank Holidays

Network Rail will carry out a package of major works on the East Coast Main Line between York and Northallerton throughout May to improve reliability and resilience.

The engineering programme is scheduled for the May bank holiday weekends — 2–4 May (May Day) and 23–25 May (Spring Bank).

Upgrades span track, structures and drainage on this busy stretch of railway to bolster long‑term performance.

The work includes:

- Installing bridge beams at Landing Lane, York, as part of the wider York Central regeneration. The scheme is being delivered as a joint venture by McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate on behalf of Homes England and Network Rail, representing a £135 million infrastructure investment that will deliver new homes, retail, workspaces and parkland. The bridge installation, which forms part of a new access road, is being completed over a single weekend to compress crane hire and other key resources into one period.

- Renewing three sets of points at Tollerton to replace life‑expired equipment and enable future maintenance to be carried out with less disruption to passengers.

- Landslip mitigation near Tollerton to stabilise embankments, reduce the risk of ground movement and keep the track safe and reliable.

- Replacing drainage along 955 metres of track at Chapman's Bridge, near Shipton, to prevent flooding and support safer, more dependable services.

Services on the East Coast Main Line will be amended over the weekends of 2–4 May and 23–25 May, with rail replacement buses in operation.

Separately, Transpennine Route Upgrade works continue during May and June, affecting journeys between Huddersfield and Leeds.
