Royston Leisure Centre has marked a key step in its refurbishment, with phase two now complete and a substantially enlarged gym open to users.

The centre, owned by North Herts Council and run by Everyone Active, has seen a series of upgrades in recent months. This latest phase has more than doubled the gym’s floor area, creating a modern, high-spec fitness space for members.

The expanded gym now occupies the former group exercise studio, significantly increasing capacity and introducing a broader range of kit. New additions include the latest Life Fitness cardio machines – such as advanced treadmills, cross trainers and bikes – upgraded strength equipment, and Theraguns to aid muscle recovery.

As part of the redesign, a dedicated group exercise studio has been created within the extension. This room now accommodates all non-cycling classes, offering an improved environment for group workouts.

North Herts Council has funded the extension as part of an investment of around £1.8 million to enhance facilities at the centre.

Sustainability improvements have been delivered alongside the fitness upgrades, including air source heat pumps, solar panels, better insulation and glazing, and improved air-handling systems. These low carbon measures will cut emissions and support the council's ambition to achieve net zero from its operations by 2030.

The enhancements are part of North Herts Council’s £16.4 million decarbonisation programme, supported by £7.74 million from the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. The works are expected to reduce carbon emissions across the council's leisure facilities in Royston, Hitchin and Letchworth by more than 60%, with the overall project due to finish in spring 2026.
